Ammonites are extinct marine animals that lived over 416 million years ago! Closely resembling squid, their name is derived from their spiral shape, as their fossilized shells somewhat resemble tightly-coiled rams horns. As ammonites grew, they added newer and larger chambers closest to the end of the coil.
